Hatti
Hattic
Language isolate (unclassified; sometimes tentatively linked to the Northwest Caucasian languages) · historical / hidden variety
Hattic (Hattian) is an extinct non-Indo-European language spoken by the Hattians in central Anatolia (modern Turkey) during the 3rd and early 2nd millennium BCE, before and alongside the Indo-European Hittites. It is generally regarded as a language isolate, though some scholars have tentatively linked it to the Northwest Caucasian family. It survives only in cuneiform passages, mainly religious and ritual formulas embedded in Hittite texts, where it was preserved as a sacred liturgical language after it had died out in everyday speech.
