The 2011 Census counted about 2.9 million speakers, the second-largest non-scheduled language. UNESCO's Atlas classes Gondi as vulnerable.

Gondi is a Central Dravidian language cluster spoken by roughly 2.7–3 million Gond people across central India, especially in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. Its regional varieties form a broad continuum and are sometimes assigned separate language codes, so speaker totals and mutual intelligibility vary by definition. Gondi is agglutinative, generally uses SOV word order and postpositions, and has been strongly affected by neighboring Indo-Aryan and Dravidian languages. Most writing uses Devanagari or Telugu, depending on region. Two indigenous abugidas are also in use: Masaram Gondi, created by Mangal Singh Masaram in 1918, and Gunjala Gondi, preserved in manuscripts from Telangana; both are encoded in Unicode.
