Idu is a Sino-Tibetan language which Glottolog files under Digarish; Mishmi, the label it usually travels under, is an areal cover term rather than a demonstrated branch. In China it is spoken in Zayü county, Nyingchi, Tibet, by roughly 1,000 people, officially classified as part of the Lhoba nationality, and the map shows this Chinese doculect. The great majority of Idu speakers, around 11,000, live across the border in the Dibang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh, India, where they are known as Idu Mishmi. The Lhoba nationality is not one people speaking one language: it covers Idu, Bokar, a variety of Adi, and Sulong, Bengni and others, which belong to different branches. Idu is unwritten and tonal, has an elaborate system of noun classifiers, and is known for the Igu, its priest-shamans, whose chants preserve an archaic register of the language.
