Rangpuri (ISO 639-3: rkt) is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language of the historical Kamta subgroup, spoken principally in Bangladesh’s Rangpur Division and adjoining northern West Bengal and western Assam in India. Names such as Rangpuri, Kamta or Kamtapuri, and Rajbanshi are applied differently across the region; Rajbanshi can also denote a related but separately coded language in Nepal. Rangpuri forms a dialect continuum with neighboring Kamta-related varieties and has long interacted with Bengali and Assamese, so language-versus-dialect labels often reflect social and political as well as linguistic choices. Its grammar generally uses subject–object–verb order, postpositions, case marking, and inflected verbs characteristic of eastern Indo-Aryan languages. It is written mainly in the Bengali–Assamese script, not in two fundamentally different “Bengali” and “Eastern Nagari” scripts; standardization remains limited, and use is strongest in speech and local cultural expression.
