The Jino are the most recently recognised of China's fifty-six nationalities: they were given separate status only in 1979, the last group added to the list. Their language belongs to the Loloish (Ngwi) branch of Lolo-Burmese within Sino-Tibetan, and is spoken on Jinuo Mountain in Jinghong, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan. There are two varieties, Youle and Buyuan, which are not mutually intelligible and are coded as separate languages; this row gives Youle, whose speakers number about 21,000. Jino society was traditionally built around long communal houses and a village elder called the zhuoba, and the Jino are known as tea growers, Jinuo Mountain being one of the six famous tea mountains of Xishuangbanna. The language is unwritten and tonal, and the forms here carry Chao tone values from the source.
