Bishnupriya Manipuri (বিষ্ণুপ্রিয়া মণিপুরী, "Bishnupriya of Manipur") is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language closely related to Assamese (as), spoken by ~120,000-140,000 people across the borderlands of Assam, Tripura, Manipur (India) and Sylhet (Bangladesh). Despite the "Manipuri" name (which traditionally refers to Meitei mni, a Tibeto-Burman language), Bishnupriya Manipuri is genealogically distinct: it is Indo-Aryan, sharing core features with Assamese and Bengali. The Bishnupriya community claims descent from a 12th-13th century Bishnupriya kingdom and oral tradition that merged with Indian Vaishnavite religious culture. Linguistically, Bishnupriya retains Assamese-style vowel system, classical SOV order, and Bengali-script literacy.
