Le proto-bantou est l’ancêtre reconstruit des langues bantoues — quelque 500 langues étroitement apparentées d’Afrique centrale, orientale et australe (swahili, zoulou, kikongo, etc.). On le situe à la frontière Cameroun–Nigeria vers 3000–2000 av. J.-C., avant l’expansion bantoue à travers le continent. Les racines sont citées comme des thèmes liés (avec un trait d’union initial).
